Adult habits are the hardest to break. As a mommy of 2 boys and a work from home mom, the words “where did the time go,” often spill out of my mouth. By the end of the day, half of the most important things on my list end up transferred to tomorrow’s list. Weeks went by before realizing that I was that “I’ll do that in a minute Mom.” You know the mom that is “too busy” to stop and color or do a puzzle. The woman too busy to open up and read the Bible. The wife that is “too tired” to give her husband attention in the evenings. The things on my big plate of life were starting to paralyze me to where I wasn’t do anything.
It was time to take an “audit” of where the minutes were disappearing to. I blocked out 3 days to document what I did each day, but it only took 4 hours to pinpoint my distractions. I realized that I wasn’t auditing my time. I was defining my distractions that sucked away the minutes that ultimately led to frustration.
I would make excuses of “why” I didn’t do certain things, but reality was that my time was being stolen right in front of my eyes. My time stealers are but not limited to: Facebook, Instagram, You Tube, and Messenger.
It would start as a subtle glance on the news feed, which led to watching a video, then to wishing everyone a Happy Birthday and before I knew it my boys were begging for attention and the morning was half over. When I became aware of the downward spiral, responsibility of taking action settled in my heart. I was so consumed with other people’s highlight reels I was missing mine. Hiding my phone became a new found freedom to tackle my to do list, read the Bible, and appreciate the small moments with my kids.
I didn’t have a big plate of life, I had a big plate of distractions that kept me from the important things in life.
I want to challenge you to take an audit of your time and define your distractions then set boundaries to start new “adult habits.” This hasn’t been easy but I vow not to miss what God has for me each day because of a silly video or Instagram photo. My missing time has been found and I will work hard to change my habits.
The Bible says, “HE has made everything beautiful in its time….” Ecclesiastes 4:11. I pray we can always see the beautiful God has for us. Who wants to accept the “time audit” challenge?
